The La Conner Daffodil Festival is a relative newcomer to the Pacific Northwest flower festivals lineup. During the month of April, there is the long-running Daffodil Parade in Pierce County, began in 1934. And of course, the internationally known Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, which began in 1984. Since 2015, La Conner has been the official host of an annual Daffodil Festival.
In March, one month ahead of the more famous tulips, the fields of Skagit County burst into bloom with daffodils. You can get an early jump on spring with a drive north to the Skagit Valley to see hundreds of acres of cheerful yellow narcissus blooms—aka daffodils.
Three major varieties of narcissus grow in Skagit Valley: Dutch Master (world’s most popular), Flower Carpet, and Standard Value. Daffodil crops are rotated every three years (in contrast to an every-year rotation for tulips). So, the daffodils you see each year are three-year-old plants.
