For 144 years, Memorial Day has been faithfully observed in Seattle. The tradition began in Seattle with the Union veterans of the Civil War and the Grand Army of the Republic in May 1879 and continues to this day. These Memorial Day weekend tours will explore the history of early Memorial Day in Seattle and the veterans of the Civil War who established the tradition in our city. You’ll hear about the history of one of Seattle’s historic treasures, the Grand Army of the Republic cemetery park, thousands of Civil War veterans who made Seattle and King County home, and how they observed Memorial Day over a span of several decades on our city. Stand in the footsteps of these Civil War soldiers where they themselves observed Memorial Day for their departed comrades and hear it in their own words. Tours are scheduled Saturday-Monday over the Memorial holiday weekend to allow opportunity for everyone to attend. Sunday evening will be a special twilight version. Tickets: $25.00 Use code “Memorial” for 50% off on tickets. More info or register: Tours | Civil War Seattle
