TUBACHRISTMAS concerts are presented around the world. Tuba and euphonium* players everywhere are invited to participate in one or more of the TUBACHRISTMAS events. And the public is invited to these free Christmas concerts. TubaChristmas reflects on the legacy of all great artists and teachers whose heritage and honor has given today’s tuba players high performance standards, well-structured pedagogy, professional integrity, personal values, and a camaraderie envied by other instrumentalists.
*Euphonium, also known as the Baritone, is a brass wind instrument, derived from the flügelhorn and cornet, pitched an octave below the trumpet. It has a wide conical bore like the tuba. It is the leading instrument in the tenor-bass range in military bands.
The idea for TubaChristmas was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. The first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted on Sunday, December 22, 1974 by Paul Lavalle in New York City at the Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who, ironically, died on Christmas Eve, 1980.
